Laura, I read this 3 times. And enjoyed every little tale told, even the heartbreaking one, which also included so much joy. I also loved how you left in your intentions, and then crossed them out! Such a visual of woulda, coulda, but not shoulda! Although I have not yet made one of Alyna's lovely recipes, I was inspired to make a wee strawberry shortcake as a gift for my local grocery store butcher. He chatted me up the other day as I was selecting a carton of farm-fresh strawberries. There he stood in his bloody white coat, working his mouth like he has a habit of doing when he is nervous, telling me that he has always meant to try these strawberries. Why not, I wondered? Well, I have a roommate, and I don't know how to store them, and I'm afraid they won't keep. I then told him how to keep them fresh, but he started to get twitchy, like now something would be expected of him. Maybe he would have to ask the strawberries he had been flirting with for so long out on an actual date. Out of grace and mercy, I let him off the hook. But then, after reading your post and looking at Alyna's lovely watercolors, I went back the following day with a single fluff of strawberry shortcake, boxed with a bow, and left anonymously with his name on it in the bacon section. My mischief making is my artistic gesture!
